Helen's Closet Negroni Shirt
Posted by Helen | 30/10/2015 | Menswear, Selfless Sewing

This week I’m delighted to bring you a menswear special! Two Negroni shirts modelled by my dear friend and sewing buddy (who is also his own person and so much more), Drew, and of course my gleeful grinning husband to be, Sam *insert applause here*.   I made Sam’s Negroni, and it was my first experience making a garment for somebody else. Drew tackled his shirt as his first major sewing project!  There were a lot of firsts for both of us in the making of these shirts, and we both learned a lot  about sewing, sewing menswear specifically, and...

Posted by Helen | 28/10/2015 | Wednesday Weekly

Happy hump day makers!  One of the reasons I decided to do this post on Wednesday is that I find the mid-week slump can be so difficult to get through sometimes.  To combat this, I make sure I have things to look forward to, like on Wednesday nights I sew.  I hope that this weekly can be a little something to look forward to for you, I certainly look forward to putting it together each week! News Blank Slate patterns released their Novelista shirt, a button up shirt with a cross back option - very cool. Amanda announced the return...

Seattle Adventure by Helen's Closet
Posted by Helen | 23/10/2015 | Me-Made Vacation

Last week, Sam and I decided to take a small trip down to Seattle for a few days before he started his new job. Seattle is only a few hours from Vancouver so it’s really convenient for a quick getaway.  We both love visiting the states, everyone is so friendly and exploring new cities is always a blast.  Be warned, the post contains a bajillion photos, apologies in advance. I decided to bring only me-made outfits for the trip, with the exception of a couple staples like leggings and a cardigan (man, I really need to make some of those!)....

I hope you can forgive the absence of the weekly last Wednesday, Sam and I decided to take a short trip down to Seattle for a few days and as much as I wanted to post about all the great things in the blogosphere, I overestimated the time I would have pre-vacation to throw it together.  I’ll have some pictures of the trip to share with you on Friday, but for now, here’s what’s going on in the sewing world! News So many pattern releases in the last 2 weeks!   Colette patterns just dropped the Wren dress, a knit...

FREE Granger Book Bag PDF Pattern by Helen's Closet
Posted by Helen | 19/10/2015 | Into My Closet

One of the things I wanted to focus on with my first pattern design, the Granger Book Bag, is making it appealing to both men and women.  I have a close male sewing buddy, and there simply isn't the variety of patterns available for men that there is for women.  Thread Theory does a fantastic job filling this gap, and I am currently hard at work on my first Negroni, an impressive pattern from by Colette Patterns.  The Granger Book Bag is a simple and stylish messenger bag, designed for everybody!   Update! The Granger Bag Pattern is now released and...

Helen's Closet Sewaholic Minoru Jacket
Posted by Helen | 16/10/2015 | Into My Closet

For the past two summers, Abby from While She Naps has interviewed sewing bloggers for her series, The Pattern That Changed My Life.  It is inspiring to read about people's experiences with sewing patterns and creative turning points. When I think about my sewing journey so far, I can trace my indie sewing obsession back to my first indie pattern, the Minoru Jacket.  It had honestly not occurred to me that I could make something as complex and stylish as the Minoru, having only used beginner patterns from the big 4 pattern companies in the past.  I can't recall how I stumbled upon the...
