Reno Swimsuit Dakota Bikini by Helens Closet Sewing
Posted by Helen | 12/02/2016 | Into My Closet

I am really excited to share this make with you today, it’s the Seamwork Dakota Bikini bottoms and Reno bikini top.  These two patterns were actually the reason I signed up for Seamwork Magazine in the first place. I love the cut of both patterns and could see myself making many versions to mix and match.  I didn’t get around to making them last summer, so this recent trip to Mexico was the perfect opportunity to make these up!  Special thanks again to Laurie Best for taking these beautiful photos in some seriously windy conditions, you rock! If you are unsure about...

It feels good to be back to the blog with the Wednesday Weekly today. I had a lovely vacation without internet (a blessing and a curse), so it was really fun to catch up on all the things that were made over the last couple weeks. I hope you all don't have too much of the February blues, Spring is just around the corner, folks, hang in there! Makes Did you see Dixie DIY's amazing 1880's bustle dress costume?!?  Seriously, it is super awesome. I am missing the making of my Cascade Duffle Coat, and Amber's version is making me want...

Simple Sundress by Helens Closet Sewing
Posted by Helen | 08/02/2016 | Into My Closet, Me-Made Vacation

We are back from an absolutely dreamy week camping on the beach in sunny Baja, Mexico!  All of my pre-trip sewing paid off big time, I had so much fun wearing my makes and taking photos with my mother-in-law, the very talented Laurie Best!  As a result I have a slew of Mexico themed photoshoots to share with you, including this simple sundress I whipped up for wandering in the desert.      I didn't use a pattern for this one, but you can check out the flutter top design I made back in the summer, there are some instructions posted there...

Grainline Studio Lark Tee by Helen's Closet

I made another striped top!  Shocking, I know.  It may be a bit on the boring side, but I like balancing out more complex sewing projects like my recent Cascade Duffle with easy and familiar quick sews like the Grainline Studio Lark Tee or my last striped shirt, the Mandy Boat Tee.  I like sewing simple and complex projects equally, they offer different opportunities for honing skills and perfecting technique.      As you may already know, I have quite an affinity for striped tops.  I love how they look so good with jeans, skirts, or leggings and they never...

Wednesday Weekly #22 Helens Closet
Posted by Helen | 27/01/2016 | Wednesday Weekly

Hello there, sewcialists! I'm excited about the volume of amazing makes and resources this week and I can't wait to share some of the things I've learned.  Special thanks to Camille from Attack of the Seam Ripper for her excellent posts about using Trello to organize projects and a fabric stash. I have implemented this and I am thrilled with it so far.  I still need to photograph all of my fabrics, which is quite a job, but I think it will be well worth the effort. News A Stitching Odyssey has announced the continuation of the Vintage Pledge Series...

Grainline Studio Cascade Duffle Coat by Helen's Closet
Posted by Helen | 25/01/2016 | Into My Closet

I am on a serious coat-making kick lately.  By which I mean I have made exactly one other coat.  I think anything over one is a ‘kick’ though, right?  Especially when it comes to more complex projects like coats.  The thing I can’t get over is just how amazing it is to sew with wool!  I have never tried before because I’ve been intimidated, but it is such a dream to sew and press and mold around seams *gush gush gush*. I also really enjoy the more complex process with all the pieces and interfacing and toggles and pockets, etc....
