Indie, Darling : Best Shirtdress Patterns

In light of the new #sewtogetherforsummer shirtdress challenge, I thought I would put together a little ‘Indie, Darling’ roundup post to provide some options to choose from! Personally, I am torn between the Named Reeta and the McCalls 6696, both of which I have been dying to try. Maybe I will have time to make both!! I know McCalls isn’t indie, but the 6696 seems to have a special place in the hearts of indie sewists and I want to see what all the fuss is about! Let me know your favourite in the comments below and be sure to check out the shirtdress challenge over on Sew Sarah Smith’s blog!

Psssst: just click on the images to go straight to the pattern details!

  1. This is a great roundup Helen; thank you soooo much!! Love it! And by the way, I’m doing the 6696 – just finished the toile for it – got to say I’m loving it so far… I will be tweaking it a bit if you want to compare notes!!!

    1. Thanks, Sarah! It was helpful for me to do it, too, I get to see what it out there! The M6696 looks awesome, what view are you doing? I think I want to do the full skirt.

  2. I love a shirtdress and there are so many great patterns out there. I have the Rome shirt/dress pattern from Orageuse on my to make list so I will have to make sure I sew this up before the June 21st deadline!

    1. I love shirtdresses, too! My favourite kind of dress, really, it is just so polished 🙂 I have added the Rome dress to the list, thanks for the suggestion! I have never heard of them before.

  3. Helen, you missed Itch to Stitch Bonn Shirt and Dress, which I tested and absolutely adore. Also, Blank Slate has the Marbella Shirtdress which is just for knit fabrics. And yes, a knit shirtdress is as brilliant as it sounds. Winter Wear Designs released the Blithe Blouse and Dress earlier this year.

Sleeveless options include Seamwork Adelaide and True Bias Southport, unless these don’t count as they don’t have shirt style collars.

    1. Thanks so much, Abbey! I have added all of these to the list 🙂 I knew I was forgetting some! I love the bonn shirt, too, that neckline is fab.

  4. That PDF I cut out yesterday? The Darling Ranges dress! 🙂 It’s proving a bit challenging to do a FBA..my first one…but I think I’ve got it figured out.

Personally…there isn’t a pattern here that I don’t like here! I’d sew them all in a heartbeat! I have the McCalls 6696 pattern but haven’t sewed it yet.

    1. What good timing, Sue! The first FBA is always a bit confusing, but it makes such an amazing difference, especially with shirtdresses! No more gaping or safety-pinning the front of the dress closed! hahaha.

  5. What a great round up of shirtdresses, there really is a style for everyone, isn’t there? I´ve made three this year…in aid of the challenge, but another 2 are definitely germinating in my head…can a girl have too many shirtdresses???. Thank you so much Helen, this is wonderful. 6. I am cutting an Alder shirt dress this weekend! I have the Helmi in my plan for April– maybe I should make the McCalls in May?! I’ve been wanting to make it for a long time. I can’t wait to see what you and all the other participants make!

  8. Ooh, I love shirtdresses! I recently made a plaid flannel one. I have also made the Marigold dress and really like it. I may have to join in on this shirtdress challenge.

  11. I have a fear of sewing buttonholes so I am going to force myself to take part in your challenge and face my fear! The Deer and Doe Bleuet will be my pattern of choice as I’ve had the pattern and fabric forever!

    1. Yay! I’m glad you have decided to join in. Buttonholes are a great sewing milestone. Just so you know, I am not hosting the challenge, but you can find more information from Sarah at sewsarah.blogspot.com 🙂

  13. What a great list! Makes the job of finding a pattern much easier but now how to choose between them?! 🙂

  14. I was all set to make the Alex shirt dress but since I saw your blaire dress I can’t stop thinking about it. Seems much more like a dress I’d actually wear rather than enjoy making but never pick out my wardrobe…like most of what I make!!
