Grainline Linden Sweater by Helen's Closet
Posted by Helen | 13/11/2015 | Into My Closet

It's no secret that I am a Grainline Studio fan, their patterns fit me really well and are very wearable.  I love that they all go well together so it is easy to make a handmade wardrobe that really works.  This week I made the Linden Sweatshirt and it is every bit as cozy as people say!       This lovely box quilted knit came from Blackbird Fabrics, an online fabric retailer who happens to be located in Vancouver!  It is really awesome to have such quality fabrics available in Canada. I ordered several different kinds of fabric from them for...

Hello fellow sewing enthusiasts!  I am currently at home sick with a cold but I do have my new knitting practice to keep me creating.  I'm not terribly good at it yet, but it is very satisfying to see the little stitches all lined up in a row.  I'm planning to make a toque for my first project, but first I need to get this whole knit and pearl thing down.  I wouldn't be terribly surprised if my first project goes a little off the rails and ends up like the picture below.  I'll still wear it with pride, of...

Grid Pants by Helen's Closet
Posted by Helen | 06/11/2015 | Into My Closet

I’ve been eyeing the grid pant motif on Pinterest lately, it's an interesting take on a classic suit pant.  Of course I went in the complete opposite direction with mine and made them tight, loud, and a little crazy!  Full disclosure, there are a lot of shots of my butt in this post #sorrynotsorry. When I say pants, I really mean leggings.  I know that some people say leggings aren’t pants, but I wholeheartedly disagree.   Pants: Also called trousers. a garment shaped to cover the body from the waist to the ankles or knees with separate tube-shaped sections for...

What?!  It's November?! Seriously, how did this happen?  One second I'm wearing a light cardigan to work and the next I'm layering sweater upon sweater just to leave the house - ugh. That Cascade Duffle Coat is starting to look mighty appealing!  Are you all frantically knitting and sewing warm weather goodies?  My dear friend Conor is going to teach me how to knit this weekend!  At least, he is going to try to teach me the most basic form of knitting.....I know nothing about knitting...it's easy, right?  And fast?  That's what I hear... News Thread Theory released a plethora...

Helen's Closet Negroni Shirt
Posted by Helen | 30/10/2015 | Menswear, Selfless Sewing

This week I’m delighted to bring you a menswear special! Two Negroni shirts modelled by my dear friend and sewing buddy (who is also his own person and so much more), Drew, and of course my gleeful grinning husband to be, Sam *insert applause here*.   I made Sam’s Negroni, and it was my first experience making a garment for somebody else. Drew tackled his shirt as his first major sewing project!  There were a lot of firsts for both of us in the making of these shirts, and we both learned a lot  about sewing, sewing menswear specifically, and...

Happy hump day makers!  One of the reasons I decided to do this post on Wednesday is that I find the mid-week slump can be so difficult to get through sometimes.  To combat this, I make sure I have things to look forward to, like on Wednesday nights I sew.  I hope that this weekly can be a little something to look forward to for you, I certainly look forward to putting it together each week! News Blank Slate patterns released their Novelista shirt, a button up shirt with a cross back option - very cool. Amanda announced the return...
